While teaching an Excel workshop, I overheard one student say to another, “All of this information is great, but I wish Excel would do [insert function here]. It would make my job so much easier!” I could hear the frustration in her voice. I apologized for eavesdropping and said, “As a matter of fact, it does. Let me show you how.” What she needed was a Pivot Table. Being unfamiliar with the term “Pivot Table,” she never clicked on it. She had been wasting time and energy for years because she didn’t know everything Excel could do. At the end of class, she approached me and said, “I thought Excel was a boring piece of software that didn’t relate to my job, so I was confused when my supervisor signed me up for an Excel workshop. I’m glad she did. I can hardly wait to get back to work and let Excel do the heavy lifting!”
I tell this story because this scenario could have been about any piece of software. If we don’t take the time to learn what the software is capable of, we spend day after day, week after week, year after year, wasting time and energy.
